I walk my dog in the wee hours of the morning.
I have yet to ascertain his criteria for, Acceptable sniffing
or Let's just keep moving, Mom.
When it comes to acceptable sniffing my pup demonstrated an important principle.
No really, he did. Let me explain.
Chester went up to the wooden fence. Neither pup could see the other, but there was lots of sniffing and tail wagging. At least that I could see on Chester's part.
When Chester barked.
The pup behind the fence barked.
Chester remarked on the bark.
It was at this point I had to pull him away. It was 4:00 am after all and people were probably trying to sleep.
As we walked away I commented to him,"You have the sniff and wag down to an art. However it was the vocalization of the sniff and wag that was your undoing."
It was then I realized that Chester had demonstrated the principle of ...

ReplyDeleteI are a critter person for certain sure.
Delete*falls over* BRILLIANT! My dog has to sniff in all the places all the other dogs pee... we walk the same route often enough that I anticipate the spots... Dogs being dogs... Thankfully, most of his talking is inside our house... he barks when somebody goes by (especially if they come up to our porch) and whines when somebody gets home until we pay attention to him and get him a treat... he growls if you offend him (usually by making him move when he's comfortable or telling him to 'drop' when he has something he shouldn't (usually my daughters underwear--you'd think she'd learn to use the laundry chute)
ReplyDeleteMy daughter never did. "MOM!" I always knew that sound meant a favorite pair of drawers had be 'destroyed'.
DeleteChester is finally learning to let me know if there is something up outside the house. Generally it is a cat or dog. Occasionally he let's me know there are people about.
I still love him.
Good for Chester! Animals are just the best. Who says they are not smart?

Oh my! That's just too delightful. I have six dogs and it's a good thing we have half an acre of garden because it's not really safe to walk around our streets at any time but particularly not early morning or evening. The most vocal of all is StJohn, the dachshund. He's half a brick high but the pitch of his bark makes up for his lack of height - he shrieks for hours it seems...

ReplyDeleteSix dogs would be a handful. I feel pretty good at walking at 3 or 4 in the morning. However I avoid 2 am on a Saturday night, I try to be very aware of my surroundings AND I carry pepper spray. ;)
